This forgotten corner of the West briefly came into prominence in the 1890s with the emergence of the mining camp of Vanderbilt in the New York Mountains.  Railroads were built, and in the early 1900s the camp of Hart blossomed, then faded.

Between 1910 and 1920 agricultural settlements were attempted in Lanfair Valley.  These flourished for a while, then too failed, leaving the area mostly uninhabited.
